DoorDash Acquires Deliveroo
It was only last month when Deliveroo left the Hong Kong market after being edged out by local delivery platform FoodPanda, and Meituan’s juggernaut Keeta. The market only represented 5% of total gross revenue for the group but had a negative 5% impact on its global growth, so the platform decided to leave the market citing financial pressures and fierce competition.
Deliveroo has, however, been growing quite steadily in Italy and the Middle East, so it comes as no surprise that DoorDash has agreed to acquire Deliveroo for USD 3.8 billion. The acquisition will expand DoorDash’s geographic reach into the UK, Belgium, Italy, France, Ireland and four countries in the Middle East, bringing its global presence to 40 countries and 50 million monthly active users.
In 2024, DoorDash and Deliveroo had a combined gross order value of USD 90 billion, and the acquisition will most likely further strengthen DoorDash, “where DoorDash has done well in a mix of urban suburban and rural areas, Deliveroo has seen success in cities and large urban centers.”
